Back in the day when I started the blog and it, in turn, ended up taking on the creative journey of 'being creative every day for a year', I did not know where that journey would lead. And to be honest, I still don't know. Where did it get me in the end? When I was done the year, I did not do any sort of summary as to what I felt I accomplished. I think I was happy to no longer have the obligation to draw, paint, photograph, write... everyday. I realize I set my own rules and I could stop at any time but with that being said, I made a commitment to myself and I wanted to see it through.
Now that I have read back on my thoughts and creations that I started over 7 years ago now (wow!), I have realized that I did really accomplish something in those 365 days. Aside from learning that I truly can stick to something for a year for no reason except saying I was doing it; I realized I am a decent artist, without any formal training. Sure I have taken a class or two here and there but ultimately, the skills I have are my own. At the time (and even now), I could draw/sketch quickly since I normally did not have much time on my hands (I seemed to be quite busy that year).
Where does this leave me today, 6+ years later? Thoughtful.
I know I do not draw like I once did and I know one reason I started this blog was to be creative again and get those juices flowing. In the end, I came to a screeching halt once the year was complete. Was it worth it, the year? Yes, definitely. I experimented with mediums I normally stay away from when I am just looking to create something or be artistic.
I took and passed the WELL AP exam on Wednesday last week (98%!) and maybe I am looking for something else to do other than study. I do have an idea for an art project and I will get on that very soon. I have some Photoshop™ work to do first.
I was out yesterday with a friend who used to go sketching with my sister and me way back when. We went somewhere that I had driven passed but had not actually stopped to sketch. It is called Rundle Park. It is the ruins of the old hospital built in 1895 - it is dated 1894 in one corner and 1899 in another corner. It is almost shocking that something that old can be found in Calgary.
Here is my sketch. I did not finish it and I really did not plan to either. I feel it turned out well. I uploaded it to Instagram.
Today, it is beautiful outside and after a very through cleaning of my condo, I thought I'd go in search of something to draw. I stopped at the playground and since it was deserted, I could draw the spring rider. (The things you learn from the internet when you have NO idea what something is called.)
That is all for today. We will see if I keep the sketching up. I make no commitment.
